Message explanation. I have never done is in a Z but have done it plenty of times to a HD cycle. You need a two gauge set-up and a compressor. The motor needs to be locked up so it won't rotate. Locking the wheels and putting it in 1st won't do, the force of the pressure will overcome the clutch (it does on a motorcycle). One way is to fabricate a tool to bolt in place of the starter with a tooth that engages the flywheel. Alternatively you could put a socket on the dampener bolt and secure the arm to the torsion bar (this is a bit dangerous, if you choose this method stay clear of danger). To to the test both valves need to be closed. In other words, the cylinder must be in compression as if it were ready to fire. You connect one end of the 2 gauge set to the compressor and the other to the cylinder to be tested. Then apply 100 psi from the compressor using the "source" gauge and observe the "leak" gauge to see what value it reads.

Typically 10% leak is acceptable (i.e. 100 on the high and 90 on the leak gauge) in a cold motor, less if its warm, less if you put oil in it to help the rings. If one valve is stuck open, the leak gauge will read Zero.
